Melissa Llamas

ARTIST IN RESIDENT
Seattle, WA

Melissa Llamas approaches each creative endeavor as an evolving process rather than a fixed outcome. Over the years, she has worked across multiple mediums, allowing material, subject, and context to inform one another in an ongoing dialogue. Her practice is rooted in exploration—an iterative commitment to growth shaped by observation, experimentation, and lived experience. Raised in Okinawa, Japan, Llamas developed an early fascination with art, design, and photography. Without formal academic training, she pursued learning through immersion: enrolling in photography courses, participating in watercolor painting classes on location, and spending countless hours studying masterworks in museums. This self-directed education cultivated a sharp sensitivity to composition, color, and visual rhythm. Exposure to diverse artistic approaches enabled her to refine her own methods and develop a visual language grounded in both discipline and intuition. Llamas credits the mentors, peers, and artists who have influenced her trajectory, acknowledging that her evolution is inseparable from the communities that shaped her perspective. Each new body of work reflects cumulative learning—an ongoing synthesis of technique, inspiration, and reflection. For Llamas, art is not a static achievement but a continuum: every piece marks both a milestone and a point of departure.

We acknowledge that the city of Seattle and its green spaces are situated on the traditional Coast Salish territory, specifically the ancestral lands of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot Peoples. We recognize the stewardship of Seattle’s green spaces by the Coast Salish people since time immemorial, the disruption of this work by colonization, and now endeavor to continue this work.
